Alternatives

Supabase alternatives: backends, databases and self-hosting

Supabase made Postgres the default for app backends. People look for alternatives for pricing, data location, or a different data model. Here are the main options and what each is best at.

How to choose

  • Where does your data need to live? On a provider’s shared cloud, in your own cloud account, or on a server dedicated to you.
  • How do you want to pay? Usage-based billing scales down to zero but can spike; flat plans are predictable.
  • Who runs the platform? Managed services do it for you; self-hosted software makes it your job.
  • What else do you need? Auth, file storage, background jobs and backups are often the deciding features.
